Instead cats claimed the Roman Forum as their knew home and do a pretty good job keeping it clear from rats. Originally the Roman Forum was a sodden valley lying between the Capitaline and Palatine hills. The Forum originates from the Italian world fuori which means outside. According to history it was the tribes shared marketplace when Romulus made peace with the Sabines. Today it is the sacred symbol of the founding of the united city Rome. During the seven centuries of the Republic the Forum was the heartbeat of the Roman empire. Colosseum From the Forums exit, turn right and follow Via dei Fori Imperiali to the Colosseum. Despite earthquakes, subsidence, pollution and the vibrations of traffic and metro line that run underneath the Colosseum, it has survived more the two millenniums. From 1992 to 2000 a restoration programme was organized by the government. Spanish StepsA symbol of Rome and an absolutely amazing sight even for those visitors that have already seen the Spanish Steps hundred of times. The Scalinata della Tritiną dei Monti is a fascinating and touching sight admired by tourists from all over the world. The Spanish Steps are beautifully decorated with flowers especially during spring season. The Fountain at Piazza di Spagna at the bottom of the Spanish Steps, the Obelisk and the twin tower church on the top and above that the Roman blue sky. The Scalinata is one the most famous attractions and was built the late baroque. The Spanish Steps were constructed from 1723 until 1726 by Fransceso de Sanctis in order to create a dignified entrance to the S. Tritiną church. The S. Tritiną church is besides S. Luici dei Francesi, which borders the French Villa dei Medici, the second French national church in Roma. Also the construction of the Spanish Steps were paid by the former Legates of the French embassy at that time. Thus one could also call the Spanish Steps the French Steps. The S. Tritiną dei Monti church was built in 1502 arranged by king Ludwig XII. The S. Tritiną dei Monti church was inaugurated more than 80 years later in 1585. The pictorial front comes from Carlo Maderno. Standing in front of the church a particularly picturesque view over the historical centre opens up. In front of the church and right on top of the Spanish Steps the church a sallustian Obelisk from the antique sallustian gardens appears. Placed there in 1789 the sallustian Obelisk is a Roman imitation faked towards the Egyptian original. On the bottom of the Spanish Steps the strongly animated Piazza di Spagna opens up. Opposite the Spanish Steps at the other end of the Piazza di Spagna the Via Condotti leads to Via Del Corso. The Piazza di Spagna itself is dominated by Pietro Berninis artifact, the beautiful foutain Fontana della Barcaccia built from 1627 to 1629. Pietro Bernini and his sun Giann Lorenzo are one of the most significant artistes of their epoch in Italy. Trevi FountainThe Trevi Fountain is not only a famous tourist attraction but also a cult place since the movie Three Coins in The Fountain. It is that movie where the superstition comes from that one must throw a coin into the water in order to secure the return to Roma. Some even say you have to throw the coin exactly over your left shoulder sitting backwards to the Trevi Fountain. Its hard to tell how old this well-known saga is but its surely not older than the Trevi Fountain itself, so lets say roughly about 200 years old maximum. As you might have guessed the Fontana di Trevi is in fact the youngest sight of all the so called classical Roman tourist sights. The Trevi Fountain was built for the since the antiquity existing Aqua Vergine around 1732 to 1751 by Nicola Salvi in front of the Palazzo Poli. |
